Become a Junior Conductor for the day

Thursday, 12 October 2023

All aboard for a competition your kids will never forget!

At West Midlands Railway, we know children love travelling on our trains.

Now, we’re offering a once-in-a-lifetime chance for four lucky winners to go one step further and take charge of a real-life West Midlands Railway train!

Our lucky winners will have the chance to work alongside our team as a “junior conductor” for the day – that means they’ll be travelling in the train cab, greeting customers, and even making announcements over the tannoy.

During the October half term holidays, on Wednesday 1st November, the four lucky winners will get to experience this money can't buy prize, conducting one of our brand-new trains!

Having officially joined the railway network on our Shrewsbury, Hereford and newly named Elephant & Bear line, our smart new Class 196 trains feature more seats, better streaming capabilities with free Wi-Fi, additional under-seat luggage space and bike storage, greater accessibility, and toilets on every service. Our new Class 730 trains with the same great benefits will be arriving on the Walsall to Wolverhampton and Cross City lines over the coming months.

To apply to become a junior conductor, children aged between four and ten (via their parents or guardians) are invited to share a video, of up to 30 seconds, on either Facebook , Instagram , or TikTok tagging West Midlands Railway and using #LittleTrainConductor.

Within the video, they’ll need to tell us exactly what they love most about trains, where they last went on a train, and why they think they should be a conductor for the day.

Never fear if you can’t upload to social media, videos can also be submitted via email to [email protected]

The winners have been announced!

Congratulations to Alex, age 7, from Northampton, Roksana, age 5, from Church Stretton, Oliver, age 9, from Coventry, Benjamin, age 7, from Kidderminster, Charlie, age 9, from Sutton Coldfield, Noah, age 5, from Telford, Sammy, 10, from Kings Heath, Adam, age 6, from Stourbridge, Zachary age 7, from Walsall, Alfred, 8, from Wolverhampton and Franco, age 5, from Sutton Coldfield.

Under the guidance of the WMR team, the four chosen children along with their parents or guardians will get to experience what it’s really like to conduct a train.

From seeing inside the train’s cab and checking tickets, to greeting customers and even making announcements over the public tannoy system, it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for budding train fans. Not to mention receiving their own whistle, high-viz waistcoat, and flags to ensure their journey as a conductor runs smoothly.

Each winner will receive a gift box with:

  • acme thunderer whistle
  • West Midlands Railway tie
  • high-viz waistcoat
  • set of red and green flags
  • hand lamp

The prize includes transport to and from the event onboard West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway services.

Refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

Any costs incurred in addition to the prize listed above are at winner’s own expense.

The prize is non-transferrable, and no cash alternative will be offered. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, the Promoter reserves the right (a) to substitute an alternative prize of equivalent or greater value and (b) in exceptional circumstances to amend or foreclose the promotion without notice. No correspondence will be entered into.

When the prize is tickets provided by West Midlands Railway, West Midlands Railway is not responsible for any loss, claim or expense arising from travel. All travel tickets are offered under the National Rail Conditions of Carriage.
