What we do

We're on a mission to cut down on carbon emissions that come from operating our train services, so we've developed a brand-new decarbonisation plan to help us reach our goals.

We're going to make our whole fleet, stations, and depots way more eco-friendly – and that's going to help us reduce our carbon footprint, as well as yours.

While we're still working on our master plan, we wanted to give you an update on what we've been up to.

Our latest annual (2021/22) carbon emissions are:

WMR Sustainability Emissions

  • Scope 1 carbon emissions 2021/22 33,205 tonnes of C02e *
  • Scope 2 carbon emissions 2021/22 57,413 33,205 tonnes of C02e*
  • Total scope 1 and 2 90,618 tonnes of C02e*
  • As we develop our decarbonisation pathway, we will be measuring and reporting on our scope 3 (indirect) carbon emissions. But we're not just sitting around waiting for things to happen – we're taking action now.

For example, we've been installing super-efficient LED lighting at over 100 stations, which is going to save a ton of energy.

We’ve also been working hard to save more water. Our new Class 196 trains are so smart that they recycle sink water into the toilets onboard, and we've installed water-saving taps at 50 of our stations, which means we're using way less water than before.

All of this is helping us cut down on our carbon emissions, and we're pretty proud of it! So next time you hop on one of our trains or visit one of our stations, you can be sure that we're doing our bit to help the planet.
