Shhh: West Midlands Railway has a savings secret to share with you this season.

From now until Christmas, we’re in that busy period of the year when social plans seem to be coming from all angles. Whether it’s autumnal evening fun, after-work drinks with colleagues, or festive activities in the run-up to December, our calendars are packed to the brim.

However, this year, the thought of that is a little more daunting than usual – given the rising cost-of-living. Which is why West Midlands Railway is here to remind you how making small simple steps, like opting for the train, can save you a pretty penny when you’re going to need it most.

Particularly during the colder months, even we can admit, having a taxi arrive outside your house and taking you straight to your end destination is a particularly desirable option. However, it’s worth noting how much more this could be costing you.

In Birmingham, you can expect to be charged an initial fee of around £2.40* before you’ve even set off. From there, it’s around 30p* per minute or £1.28* per kilometre – which can leave you with a sizeable tab quicker than you’d expect [1]. Put it this way, just 15 minutes in the car (pesky evening traffic) and you’re looking at around £7 for your journey – and that doesn’t even consider how you’re getting home. Do this a few evenings a week during the busy seasons and you can see how this would take a hit on your wallet.

So, where you can, why not save money on travel? And instead use your extra cash to purchase tickets to events, buy a hot chocolate at a festive market, or get you and a colleague a drink at the local pub. West Midlands Railway offers a £2.60 Evening Return ticket – that will get you to your function and home for…well £2.60. Leaving you with more money to enjoy making special memories over the coming months. So, all that you’ll need to decide now is where you’re heading – here’s a few of our evening favourites:

52 Gas Street

For some delicious evening drinks with a couple of friends after work, there’s no place like 52 Gas Street. Specialising in its diverse range of refreshments, you’ll be sure to find what you’re looking for at one of the best cocktail bars in Birmingham.

The Glee Club

Who doesn’t love a laugh on a crisp autumnal evening? Well, you’re sure to have plenty when you make your way over to The Glee Club. Based in the Arcadian, every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday you’ll find its own brand of comedy nights. And conveniently situated right in the city-centre – making this the perfect after dinner spot.

Lane 7

Looking for the ideal corner for you and your friends to have a fun-packed evening – look no further than Lane 7. It’s bowling in Birmingham like you’ve never seen it before, with retro arcades, and games. Have some food, get yourself a drink, and try your hand at a game of bowling you won’t forget.

Birmingham Hippodrome

There’s nothing better to break up the week than an evening of entertainment at Birmingham Hippodrome. Whether it’s drama, comedy, or dance, there’s plenty to enjoy sat right in the city’s centre. So, head over now and start thinking about what you’re going to watch this season.

So, what are you waiting for? There’s plenty of savings and fun to be had this autumn when you make such a simple (but effective) change. Get the most out of your evenings when you book it, train it, love it.
