When are Off-Peak train times?

Applies to Off-Peak Singles and Off-Peak Day Return tickets within the West Midlands Zones 1-5:

  • Valid Monday to Friday from 9:30.
  • Not valid for trains departing from Birmingham New Street, Birmingham Moor Street, Birmingham Snow Hill, Five Ways, or Jewellery Quarter between 16:35 and 18:00.
  • No evening restrictions apply if you are travelling to or beyond Hereford, Shrewsbury, Stafford, or Northampton.
  • Weekends and bank holidays are Off-Peak all day.
  • Valid Monday to Sunday from 18:30.
  • Valid Monday to Friday from 9:30.
  • No evening restrictions apply.

Types of Off-Peak tickets

Off-Peak Single

Tickets valid for a one-way journey on any Off-Peak train.

Off-Peak Day Return

Tickets valid for one day on any Off-Peak trains with return travel on the same day.

Off-Peak Return

Tickets valid on any Off-Peak trains with the return journey made within one calendar month.

£2.90 Evening Return

Same day return travel between any two stations in the West Midlands Rail Zones after 18:30. Learn more about the Evening Return ticket.

Daytripper

Unlimited Off-Peak train, bus and tram travel within West Midlands Rail Zones. Valid for one day. Learn more about the Daytripper ticket .

Super Off-Peak

Even cheaper Off-Peak tickets for trains that are less busy. But, some further time restrictions apply. Available on longer distance routes with London Northwestern Railway and other operators.

The below information applies to LNR journeys between Northampton and London, as well as longer distance journeys marked as "West Midlands Trains only" or "WMR & LNR".

For stations between Milton Keynes Central and further north (E.g Birmingham):

Trains travelling to London Euston

  • Valid Monday to Friday for trains arriving at London Euston after 10:00.
  • This ticket is valid for travel all day on weekends and Bank Holidays.

Trains travelling from London Euston

  • Valid Monday to Friday for trains departing London Euston after 9:15 (8:45 if travelling further north than Milton Keynes).
  • This ticket is also valid for travel all day on weekends and Bank Holidays.

For stations between Bletchley and Kings Langley, or stations on the Abbey Line (Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey):

Trains travelling to London Euston

  • Valid Monday to Friday for trains arriving at London Euston from 9:30.
  • This ticket is valid for travel all day on weekends and Bank Holidays.

Trains travelling from London Euston

  • Valid Monday to Friday for trains departing London Euston from 9:30.
  • Not valid for trains departing London Euston between 16:00 and 19:00.
  • This ticket is also valid for travel all day on weekends and Bank Holidays.

Trains travelling to London Euston

  • Valid Monday to Friday for trains arriving at London Euston from 10:00.
  • This ticket is valid for travel all day on weekends and Bank Holidays.

Trains travelling from London Euston

  • No evening restrictions, you can leave London at any time.
  • This ticket is also valid for travel all day on weekends and Bank Holidays.

The below information applies to journeys between Northampton and London, as well as longer distance journeys marked as 'West Midlands Trains only' or 'WMR & LNR'.

Trains travelling to London Euston

  • Valid Monday to Saturday for trains arriving at London Euston from 13:00.
  • Not valid for trains arriving at London Euston between 16:00 and 19:00.
  • This ticket is valid for travel all day on weekends and Bank Holidays.

Trains travelling from London Euston

  • Valid Monday to Saturday for trains departing from London Euston after 10:30.
  • Not valid for trains departing London Euston between 16:00 and 19:00.
  • This ticket is also valid for travel all day on weekends and Bank Holidays.

Applies for tickets stated as Super Off-Peak Day Single or Return and Super Off-Peak Travelcard. Other train companies have their own Off-Peak restrictions. Check your ticket to see the restrictions for your journey.

The below information applies to Super Off-Peak tickets marked as 'West Midlands Trains only' or 'WMR & LNR'.

Trains travelling to and from Liverpool or Birmingham:

  • Valid Monday to Saturday for trains arriving at Liverpool or Birmingham from 13:00.
  • Not valid for trains departing Birmingham or Liverpool between 16:00 and 19:00.
  • This ticket is also valid for travel all day on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Applies for tickets stated as Super Off-Peak Return. Other train companies have their own Off-Peak restrictions. Check your ticket to see the restrictions for your journey.

Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets that show ‘West Midlands Trains only’ or 'WMR/LNR Only' are cheaper than the alternative ‘any permitted’ and allow you to travel only on West Midlands Railway or London Northwestern Railway trains.

Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak tickets that show ‘any permitted’ allow you to travel on any train operator within any of the Off-Peak times.

Check under the Route heading on your ticket to see if there are any operator or geographical restrictions that apply to your journey.

An Off-Peak Family Travelcard allows up to four kids to enjoy same day return travel for just £1 each to London when accompanied by an adult. Plus unlimited bus, tube, tram and DLR journeys for the day.
