More about Dudley Zoo and Castle

Adventure awaits at Dudley Zoo and Castle—home to some of the world’s rarest animals and beautiful architecture with a deep history. From amphibians to primates, and reptiles to big cats, you’ll find hundreds of exotic and endangered species inhabiting the site.

Originally opened in 1937, the Zoo was built around the ruins of the 11th century Dudley Castle, by the renowned Modernists: ‘The Tecton Group’. In their designing process, they viewed the Zoo as a microcosm of society and sculpted structures to protect the welfare of the animals, whilst providing a clear view from a safe position for visitors. Using reinforced concrete, they created a revolutionary new design of building called Tectons. 12 structures were originally forged, and following renovation and reconstruction, Dudley Zoo still holds the world’s largest single collection of Tectons.

Today the Tectons are accompanied by animal housing, enclosures and paddocks, which are home to a variety of 200 species. The beautiful grounds cover approximately 40 acres, and hold more than 1300 creatures. Much of Dudley Zoo’s animal collection is linked to international conservation and breeding programmes, with a strong focus on educating visitors about the importance of conservation and protecting endangered species. You’ll find Asiatic lions, Sumatran tigers, Rothschild giraffes, Madagascan lemurs, Bornean orangutans, Humboldt penguins and more awe-inspiring rare species at the Zoo.
